6- Must-Try Traditional Japanese Dishes
Delicious, unique Japanese Cuisine dishes for you to try
Unagi (ウナギ) is freshwater eel. This dish is often seasoned or marinated, then grilled. It is typically a very simple dish, often served over a bed of rice.
Sukiyaki (すき焼き) is more colloquially referred to as Japanese hot pot. This dish works wonderfully if you want to enjoy a family-style meal. This sweet and salty dish can be made with any ingredients, however, it typically contains meat, vegetables, and noodles slow-cooked tableside. For this combination of ingredients, an all-encompassing knife set, like our Kanpeki would be the best option for simplified preparation.
Tempura (天ぷら) is a battered and fried Japanese dish. This dish can consist of vegetables or seafood dipped in a liquid batter mixture, which is then fried until fully cooked and golden brown.
Kushiyaki (串焼き) (grilled meat and vegetables) directly translates to “skewers”. This general term may refer to various food combinations that are assembled on a wooden skewer then grilled. This dish may be made of pork, poultry, beef, seafood, or even vegetables. For meat preparation, our Kensei knife would be best, and for precise cutting of vegetables with ease, our Utility knife would be wonderful. Charcoal grilling is the mainstream way of cooking kushiyaki and is what makes this traditional dish exceptionally unique.
Soba (そば) directly represents buckwheat noodles. These are thin Japanese noodles made from buckwheat flour. These noodles can be served in a variety of ways, both hot or cold. They are flavorful enough to be served by themselves with a simple sauce or to be served with broth.
Udon (うどん) refers to a thick Japanese noodle made from wheat flour. Although this noodle is used in many traditional dishes, it can be served by itself as a noodle soup in a very light broth.
All of these dishes are wonderful, traditional items that we strongly suggest trying if you haven’t already.
